Human shield hasbara: how the myths are told and retold

Israel is built on myths. It’s ancient history is mythical, its recent history is mythologised. It relies on myths to survive today. Domestically, Jews must believe ancient myths to rationalise stealing land from people already there, they must believe current myths to assuage their consciences about oppressing the people who were already there and stubbornly aren’t leaving. They must believe myths about those people who were already there and are still there. And they must believe in myths to retain their self-created siege mentality. Externally Israel and its Jews must ensure that those same myths are believed, as well as some it has created recently. Most notable of these recent myths is the “Hamas uses human shields” that it claims the people in Gaza are, as if there are fighters literally hiding behind their pregnant wives, elderly in-laws and inside of mosques and schools. And this, like all of Israel’s other myths is untrue. This is how they tell themselves, and attempt to reinforce the myths.

An Israeli expert once revealed this hidden truth to Trita Parsi:

“You have to recognize that we Israelis need an existential threat. It is part of the way we view the world. If we can find more than one, that would be preferable, but we will settle for one.”

Reading Israeli and other Jewish media provides a disturbing peek inside a mass psychopathology, it becomes very clear that these people aren’t quite sane. What they tell themselves (and the outside world) doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, but like the schizophrenic that truly believes he is Queen Elizabeth, facts do not penetrate, logic does not persuade, even photographic or video evidence is dismissed as faked, maliciously edited or staged – to make the Jewish military state “look bad.”

“Insanity, craziness or madness is a spectrum of behaviours characterized by certain abnormal mental or behavioural patterns. Insanity may manifest as violations of societal norms, including a person becoming a danger to themselves or others, though not all such acts are considered insanity. In modern usage insanity is most commonly encountered as an informal unscientific term denoting mental instability, or in the narrow legal context of the insanity defense. In the medical profession the term is now avoided in favour of diagnoses of specific mental disorders; the presence of delusions or hallucinations is broadly referred to as psychosis. When discussing mental illness in general terms, “psychopathology” is considered a preferred descriptor.”

The myth of ‘human shields’ is especially handy in times of the Jewish military state’s periodic campaigns of violence, death and ruin on Gaza, because it allows them to portray themselves as noble, righteous, life-loving warriors and those evil resistance in Gaza as cowardly, cynical, death-loving maniacs. But as all their myths, when inspected, it shows the amazing degree of psychological projection so common to Israel and its Jews.

In reality, it is the Jewish military state that uses children as human shields. This was denied strenuously by the spokesperson for its military until it couldn’t be denied because there were photos and it was published in media outside the country. (The Jewish military state has a military-censor on all of its media, nothing gets published without being ‘cleared for publication” by it first.) Its military even went to the High Court in 2005 to plead to be able to continue to use children as human shields.

During the second Intifada (uprising, in Arabic) of 2005, Amnesty International said that it had “investigated tens of cases where the Israeli army used Palestinians, children as well as adults, as ‘human shields’ during military operations in towns and refugee camps throughout the Occupied Territories. Palestinians were forced to walk in front of Israeli soldiers who, at times, fired their weapons while shielding themselves behind the civilians. As well (they) were made to enter houses ahead of Israeli soldiers to check for explosives or gunmen hiding inside, to inspect suspicious objects, to stay in their houses when Israeli soldiers took them over to use as sniper positions, or to enter the houses of wanted, possibly armed, Palestinians to tell them to surrender to Israeli forces.”

B’Tselem reports that Israel routinely uses “human shields (as) an integral part of the orders received by Israeli soldiers….”

And in 2006 the Israeli military used human shields in Beit Hanoun, Gaza, after seizing control of buildings used six civilians, two of which were children, during gun battles with resistance. In fact, one of the civilians was made to walk in front of Jewish soldiers as they searched all the flats in the tower. They knowingly violated international law. But who is there to hold them accountable?

in 2007 the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth published a video taken by a foreign solidarity activist of an incident in which Jewish soldiers ordered Palestinians to act as human shields during a military act:

The act, which was also in violation of a Supreme Court decision from 2005, was filmed by a foreign activist on Wednesday in Nablus’ Sheikh Munis neighborhood, where the soldiers encircled the home of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades member Abed el-Qadr.

During the operation the IDF forces demolished the house, but it later turned out that el-Qadr was not on the premises.

Meanwhile, a number of Palestinian youths threw stones at an IDF Hummer that was securing the soldiers encircling the house. According to foreign peace activists at the scene, the soldiers then ordered two youths who happened to pass by to stand in front of the vehicle in order to stop the stone-throwing.

The peace activist who filmed the act told Ynet, “The soldier closest to me said they were only asking the youths to tell their friends to stop throwing stones.”

He said he eventually stopped filming so as not top upset the soldiers, but added that the incident continued for “several more minutes.”

The activist said this is the first time he had seen soldiers ordering Palestinians to serve as human shields for army vehicles, but added that in the past few months he had witnessed a number of incidents in which soldiers used Palestinian civilians during their activity.

International humanitarian law forbids using civilians as human shields by placing them next to soldiers or next to military facilities, with the intention of gaining immunity from attack, or by forcing the civilians to carry out dangerous military assignments.

Please note that the military action was supposed to demolish the house with the Palestinian inside it. And note also there was disappointment when that person was not inside the home during the punitive home demolition.

And again in 2009 they again used a human shield, a 9 year-old boy during the infamous “Cast Lead” war on Gaza, in the neighbourhood of Tel al-Hawa. The U.N. secretary-general’s envoy for protecting children in armed conflict related how they forced this little boy to walk in front of them while they were being fired upon, which of course spared them from being fired upon as Gazan resistance does, contrary to Jewish myths, value life.

The BBC’s Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen visited Gaza during this most recent genocidal campaign and spoke with many people besides doctors. And he wrote:

I saw no evidence during my week in Gaza of Israel’s accusation that Hamas uses Palestinians as human shields. I saw men from Hamas on street corners, keeping an eye on what was happening. They were local people and everyone knew them, even the young boys. Raji Sourani, the director of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights in Gaza, told me that Hamas, whatever you think of it, is part of the Palestinian DNA.

But we were talking about myths – the ones Israel’s Jews tell themselves and the outside world.

Propaganda is a powerful thing, but it is very dangerous to believe your own, and Israel’s Jews do – in spades. It colours their thinking to the point where it is totally disconnected from reality.

The settler-colonist site, Arutz Sheva, shows exactly how they make and reinforce their own propaganda – endlessly and in the most grotesque fashion (read their comments, if you dare to, it is frightening the level of bloodlust and group-think).

There are far more dead Jewish soldiers than is publicised because that would dispel one of the potent myths: the ‘invincibility’ or ‘might’ of the ‘most moral army in the world.’ And there are far more wounded, also not admitted for the same reasons. But it cannot pretend there are no wounded. And so those wounded, and their families become actors in the myth-making and reinforcing machine.

In a 22 July article entitled, “Soldier: Terrorists Charged with Babies in Hand: Shocking testimony from hospitalized soldiers reveals extent of Hamas’ use of children as human shields” it relays third-hand a harrowing account of the utter inhumanity and death-loving Hamasniks and other evil resistance fighters:

Parents of wounded soldiers spoke to Kol Yisrael on Tuesday and shared some of the disturbing stories they had heard from their sons. They said soldiers have repeatedly seen young children in Sheijaya, Gaza, be sent out into the streets with guns to try to attack IDF troops.

One parent reported that terrorists had run at IDF soldiers with a gun in one hand and a baby in the other, apparently in hopes that the soldiers would see the child and hold their fire. If soldiers fired, the parent added, the child’s death could be used as propaganda against Israel.

“They’re continuing the same trick of using children as human shields, just as they did in Operation Cast Lead,” one father said. Women are used as human shields as well, he added.

The worst thing is that it is not only believed, but expected by the Jewish public in Israel. After all, it is a military state and thrives on war and conflict, no matter how often its leaders cynically make noises about “wanting peace.” A cursory review of the history and actions of the Jewish military state shows that to be untrue.
